Occupational health and safety (OHS) training is an important component of an effective OHS management system and a legal requirement under OHS laws. Production companies as the employer generally represented by the producer must provide OHS instruction, training and information particularly with regards to the legislative risk management and consultative provisions that workers (employees, crew, freelancers & contractors) are required to participate in.
To assist the film & television industry meet these obligations SPAA in conjunction with OHS Media Services Pty Ltd through the WorkCover NSW Assist funding program has developed an on-line OHS learning & assessment course – ‘Ensure a Safe Workplace’ (BSBOHS509A), the compulsory OHS unit from the Diploma of Screen & Media (CUF50107) under the Screen & Media National Training Package (CUF07).
In addition for general construction work it is mandatory for workers to hold formal OHS training certification. In some jurisdictions this now includes film & television, live performance and events construction activities & sites.
The SPAA ‘Ensure a Safe Workplace’ (BSBOHS509A) course meets the WorkCover authority OHS construction induction training requirements.
Managers, employees, crew, freelancers & contractors who hold this OHS certification can work across productions, employers and Australian jurisdictions.
The ‘Ensure a Safe Workplace’ course and certification is designed to be undertaken by either:
- Completing the assessment requirements only for those who may possess the required OHS knowledge & experience (i.e. RPL – recognsied prior learning); and /or
- Completing the course learning materials & activities and assessment requirements
